The “Compass” Hat With Acoustic Navigation

If you feel that pulling out the phone to receive directions to the destination you have to reach is old-school, how about a sound guidance system implemented beneath the hat on your head?

Two students at Cornell University have developed a GPS-based hat that relies exclusively on directional sound for navigation. It uses a mixture of amplified and phase shifted sounds to give clues to the direction in which you must grasp. What’s interesting about the “Compass” hat is that you don’t need to use gestures or voice in order to get directions; the hat does it all.

The acoustic navigation hat is currently just a prototype, so we don’t need to worry when it comes to fashion tastes of the two students at Cornell, however, something that is worth noting that the technology inside the hat can reach other clothes and more advanced devices.

People with disabilities will be those who will benefit the most from this device since persons with visual impairments can follow any directions given by GPS on their phone or other devices. With the new system of acoustic guidance instructions, the people with handicaps can reach their destination easily and faster without needing to worry that they will become lost in the city.

The acoustic navigation hat is is a great and fun invention and we are looking forward to hear more about it in the near future.
