iPhone 4

The iPhone 4 is remembered as one of the most significant iPhones because it brought in umpteen of new features with it. The iPhone 4 was a big leap from the original iPhone launched in 2007. It introduced breakthrough features like a front camera that facilitated Face-Time calling.

Apple also took great measures to improve the overall display of the iPhone by keeping the screen size the same as its descendants at 3.5 inches, but by massively increasing the pixel density to 326ppi from a modest 163ppi. The screen resolution was doubled lengthwise and breadthwise to 960 x 640 from 480 x 320 introducing the very popular retina display. Apple used optical lamination along with an in-plane switching (ISP) panel and it combined LED backlight with these to provide exceptional viewing angles. The company boasted that with the resolution provided in the iPhone 4, the pixels disappeared for the average eye.

Apple has always focused on exemplary aesthetics for all its products. The iPhone is no less. The use of chemically hardened glass, the stainless steel band around the sides, its flat and sleek look, made the iPhone 4 a lot more alluring. It is 24% thinner than its descendants and it was made available in black and white.

The iPhone 4 uses an ARM Cortex processor and a PowerVR SGX535 graphics card. With 512MB RAM, it features a higher RAM that the previous models but the storage options are the same – 16GB and 32GB. It features a 1420mAh battery which is decent enough according to the screen size. It has a 5MP rear camera with LED flash. A VGA resolution front camera is also featured in the iPhone 4. This front camera is a first in the history of iPhones and it ensured that Apple could launch FaceTime video calling for iPhone users.

The iPhone 4 launched on June 15, 2010 and it was accompanied with the launch of iOS 4. The phone was sold over 185 carriers in 88 countries by the end of 2010. The phone’s launch was a success and Apple sold 17 million units within its first weekend.

The white iPhone 4 took a little longer to reach the stores because Apple had to ensure that the white paint would not be affected easily by regular use or fade because of UV rays. With these things in mind, there was also the need to ensure that the opacity of the paint will not interfere with the internal sensors ensuring that both the models functioned at par. The white models hit the stores on April 28, 2011.

Before the iPhone 4 was launched, it was also the reason for the biggest product leak faced by Apple ever when an Apple engineer lost an iPhone 4 prototype in the Redwood City bar. The phone was camouflaged as an iPhone 3GS and popular tech news website Gizmodo got its hands on this prototype. The website disassembled the phone and made way for some very interesting details about the much-anticipated iPhone 4.
