iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus

Announced on September 9, 2014, and released on September 19, 2014, the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6Plus. Here was an entry of a phone that was slightly different from the usual announcements in the history of iPhones. While the iPhone 6 was the latest flagship device, Apple decided to stay abreast with the rest of the smartphone market by keeping up with the larger screen size demands of the audience. This brought the iPhone 6 Plus into the picture.

The iPhone 6 featured a 4.7-inch screen which was larger than the 4.4-inch screen of its predecessor. But in addition to making the iPhone taller, Apple also decided to add to its width. Since the screen size was going up, the overall dimensions of the phone also had to adapt to this change. Apple maintained the 16:9 aspect ratio and the same pixel density as that of the iPhone 5s in the iPhone 6 but the iPhone 6Plus boasted of higher pixel density at 401ppi. This meant that iPhone 6 users enjoy Retina HD Display which means very high resolution.

The design of the phone changed from the sharp edges of the previous models to the softer, rounder curvy edges of the iPhone 3GS. The aluminum backing remained the same and the Power button moved from the top of the phone to the right side of the device. Long-time Apple fans didn’t find it easy to adapt to this new positioning of the power button, but with time, no one seemed to be complaining about it. It also happened to be the slimmest phone Apple had designed so far. But thinner phones lose out on camera features because of cameras as you would know love depth. The camera has a slight bulge towards the outside.

It is powered by the A8 chip designed by Apple which is based on a 64-bit architecture just like the 5s. Both the performance and the battery usage of the phone has improved significantly. With concerns regarding the motion sensors in the previous model, Apple wanted to make sure that things go smoothly with the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. An improved M8 motion co-processor is included in the phone which supports the barometer sensor that helps in measuring air pressure to identify changes in altitude.

The 8MP rear camera with iSight can shoot pictures and videos in 1080p and it can also shoot slow-motion videos. The 6 Plus has a similar camera but it includes Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) which significantly improves the ability of the phone to capture images in motion or to shoot videos.

An NFC chip was added to the phone which in conjunction with the Touch ID helped in the use of Apple Pay which replaced wallet to allow users to pay by simply bringing the phone close to the
