Is Apple Interested in Nokia HERE Maps?

Apple introduced their Maps with iOS 6 when they totally removed the exclusivity of Google Maps as default Maps in iOS. Apple Maps brought a new idea and vision to map service, especially for iOS and OS X platform. With the fluid zooming, navigation system, Apple Maps improves the Maps service, and there is also flyover feature included, which at that time was a feature that couldn’t find in any maps services, and the other feature is 3D Maps.

Actually, the features in Maps the part of their acquisition toward 3D mapping C3 Technologies company. Apple has a tendency to acquire a developing startup technology with a very cheap price.

Ever since its appearance, Apple Maps got a lot of critics related to less precision, inappropriate 3D appearance and blurs. Some users were even getting lost when using Apple Maps because the place suggested by Apple Maps was incorrect. But, over the years, Apple Maps has provided lots of fixes and improvements, but I think that some of the maps services need to be enhanced.

According to Bloomberg, Nokia is looking for a company interested to buy their HERE Maps:

“Nokia Oyj, the Finnish company selling its money-losing maps business, is trying to drum up interest from some of the biggest names in technology including Apple Inc., Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. and Amazon.com Inc., people with knowledge of the matter said.

….. Nokia is seeking more than 3 billion euros ($3.2 billion) from a sale of the unit, said one of the people, who asked not to be identified discussing private information.

The mapping assets have lost value: Nokia bought them for $8.1 billion in 2008. They were worth about 2 billion euros last year, according to Nokia’s financial reports.”

HERE is a Nokia business unit that brings together Nokia’s mapping and location assets under one brand. The technology of HERE is based on a cloud-computing model, in which location data and services are stored on remote servers, so that users have access to it regardless of which device they use.

Does Apple Interested in Nokia HERE Maps?

Will Apple be interested in this technology, service location asset, transit public database asset, offline maps feature, etc. from HERE Maps? Some of its features and assets has not been owned by Apple Maps. But, with a high acquisition price like that, it seems Apple will think over to acquire HERE Maps considering the highest acquisition that Apple has done was Beats with $3 billions for their music accessories, vision, brand and Streaming music service. With the price offered by Nokia for their HERE Maps, seems that Apple will say No.
