With iOS 9, Apple made a small change in order to improve the security on iPhones and iPads. Now, the users can set a six digit passcode instead of 4-digit one. Even though this may seem like a small change, it really is significant for those who want to protect their devices because with two additional digits the process of hacking is even more complicated. If you don’t have the iOS 9 already, the first thing you need to do in order to be able to set a six digit passcode is to update the iOS software on your device.

Now, to protect your iPhone or iPad with a six digit passcode, follow the steps below:

  • Navigate to Settings
  • Tap Touch ID & Passcode
  • Type your code
  • Tap Change passcode
  • Type your code one more time
  • Now, add a 6-digit passcode

Right above the number pad, you may notice “Passcode options”, and by tapping on that you will see several items such as “Custom Alphanumeric Code”, “Custom Numeric Code”, and “6-Digit Numeric Code”. This allows you to set the 6-digit code, custom numeric code, or custom alphanumeric code. You can also toggle between passcode options and choose a 4-digit or 6-digit code in case you ever change your mind and want to set a four-digit passcode again.
